On 20–23 March 2016, the regular GALA conference took place in New York. It hosted a record number of guests—420 people from every corner of our planet.

This time, the organisers changed a format of some sessions, so the participants had a chance to visit one of the master classes every day in addition to traditional presentations. The master classes covered such topics as website optimisation and promotion, possible changes in a business model of translation agencies, and platforms for remote interpreting. Moreover, instead of using the conventional speednetworking format, the organisers divided allparticipants in international teams and conducted a quiz. Everybody liked this format because all team members had a chance to become more closely acquainted with each other.

Machine translation remains one of the key topics. Previously, the industry representatives used to worry that machines could replace human translation. Now, on the contrary, they believe that a machine will never work without a human, so the discussion revolved around human-machine co-operation.

As usual, the conference gave us an opportunity to meet our partners and colleagues, discuss our concerns and find solutions to some of them.
